It was sunny, but very chilly, as I left Glendale heading west to Pierce College. By the time I reached Sherman Oaks the fog was settling in.
When I passed the Sepulveda Dam the fog was so thick I could barely see the taillights in front of me. By the time I reached Pierce College the sky had cleared somewhat and I was able to see Phil Caliva in his Alfa Romeo waiting for me. Why the Alfa? The answer was “it hadn’t been out in four months”, and Phil was doing a two- fer – going to the Best of France and Italy show at Woodley Park after Pierce.
This month’s marque was hot rods, and the expectations were high for the quality of cars on display. After I parked next to Phil, Jack Gies pulled in, and I noticed Fred Cohen with his ‘Vette’ parked an aisle away.
The hot rod corral had the usual ‘32-’34 Fords and the Chevy muscle cars, but the most interesting example of hotrod was the Hummer2 that had been chopped and lowered with a modified engine. It had taken the owner approximately four years to do it all, After coffee and a breakfast burrito and a tour around the parking lot Phil decided to leave for his second show and Jack and I left for home, leaving Fred and his Vette to represent the Austin Healey Club.
