Surf & Turf Rally 2018

Saturday the 17th was a fabulous day for a drive, and drive we did.  Members of our Healey Club and the Jaguar Owner’s Club met up at the Jaguar Regional Training Center in Irvine bright and early.  After a light breakfast and perusal of the various rides, a Driver’s Meeting was held, and the rules of the rally were explained.  About 9:15 forty-eight Healeys and Jags roared off toward the ocean.

The first leg of the trip wound westward, eventually reaching Pacific Coast Highway by Monarch Bay.  After about a ten-mile sprint north along the coast, the group, now hopelessly strung out, made their way back inland for a stop at Morris and Welford, SoCal’s newest classic car dealership, near John Wayne Airport.  A half hour stop was hardly enough time to savor the two dozen or so classics and exotics on offer, including a fairly nice ’64 Healey.

On the road again, we continued east eventually catching Santiago Canyon Road and Live Oak Canyon Road into Rancho Santa Margarita.  There we met up at the Canyon Fireside Grill where we enjoyed a few cold ones and a superb buffet lunch.  Jimmy Buffett music provided the background and as usual we all purchased extra poker cards and raffle tickets to try to improve our chances of winning a prize.  At the end of the day, the Clubs raised in excess of $4500 in support of Cystic Fibrosis Research; the best total in the eleven years this event has been put on.  Thanks to all who attended for their generosity! In attendance were Greg Aden, Phil Caliva, David and Jackie Deamer, Chuck and Dawn Lakowski (in a Subaru!), Steve and Cindy Kirby, Tim McNiff, Mike Scroggie, Tom Spangler, Bruce Steel and his Dad, Jess and Julie Pena, and John Hummer and Alice Johnson.
